The word smart has been used for electronic devices for a long time and its meaning is not what it used to be a decade ago. The innovation and upgrade in technology have changed the concept of smart sensors for the home. The working of smart sensors has been changed drastically with the help of different types of smart sensors.

The smart sensor applications are capable of intelligent algorithms that make them more useful to work without human interference and provide constant monitoring. There is no need for smart sensors introduction but still, there are different types of technology that these devices use to sense and detect with reliable and accurate information.

Working of Smart Sensors

The working of smart sensors is based on two different approaches or technology known as MEMS or microelectronic mechanical system and VLSI or very large scale integration technology. The first system MEMS enables the system to maintain a large amount of data that is collected by the processor for further processing.

This is used for the calculations to provide accurate results. The best part of this approach is the reduced need for energy and enhanced accuracy. Some other features can be named as sensitivity and selectivity of the sensors across the range.

The second approach of VLSI is based on the system that uses a large number of computing chips and transistor gates on a single silicon semiconductor wafer creating miniaturized and fast computing circuits. This approach has reduced the size and cost of the devices while increasing their speed along with reducing energy consumption.

What are the Different Types of Smart Sensors for Upgrading the Lifestyle?

There are various types of sensors used for a plethora of applications that make us capable of holding a huge amount of data, taking the right measurements, identifying the pattern, and storing the data to the cloud for future accessibility for the decision-making process.

Let’s look at some of the most common and useful types of smart sensors that are used in our homes and offices:

  • Level Sensor

The level sensors are used to measure the level of industrial-grade tanks, bins, containers, and inventory in real-time. It helps for process control and inventory management systems for a huge number of applications like waste management, fuel gauging, etc.

  • Pressure Sensors

This sensor is widely used for providing ample security in applications like gas and oil pipelines. These can be installed to provide the data about leakage and pressure in gas and fuel lines that are connected to the centralized processor that monitors and keeps track of maintenance.

The reduced pressure means leakage or any other irregularity in the pipeline. The central control unit will alert about the issue and give accurate details of the required maintenance.

  • Temperature Sensor

These are also the most commonly used smart sensors for homes and offices. You will find them in the industrial setting also due to their feature of detecting temperature that keeps on changing without making any contact with the object.

In manufacturing units or factories these are used to check if the machines are getting overheated. If the high heating is detected then it will alert the system to shut down and stop the process for upkeep. The data can be stored in the cloud by connecting with IoT devices for more information.

  • Infrared Sensors

This is one of the most commonly used smart sensors that is used in a variety of applications in industrial and commercial settings. These are used in medicine manufacturing, to track blood flow during surgical procedures.

You must have seen smart thermometers using IR sensors, and wearable devices that track everyday activity.

  • Proximity Sensor

This sensor is used to detect the nearby objects or the right location. These are also used in autonomous vehicles and assembly lines. This will detect the location and start an action depending upon the location of the object.

It has a variety of uses in robotics but the most innovative and commercial use can be seen in the retail industry. It can detect the location of people walking and wandering in the periphery of stores and malls and send good deals and coupons to these customers’ mobile phones.

Other Types of Smart Sensors

These are some of the most common sensors for industrial or commercial purposes but there are so many other sensors as well in the market that are known as smart sensors for home. The smart sensors for homes serve the special purpose to make our lives easy and comfortable.

These make the menial and everyday tasks automated like switching the lights on/off, leaving the AC on, etc. Some of the examples of smart sensors for home are motion sensors, light sensors, smoke detectors, and air quality sensors.

some applications of smart sensors

Industrial Applications

We have already discussed some of the biggest and most innovative methods of using smart sensors. For industrial applications like heat and moisture detection in machinery. Analyzing the pressure and vibrations for right maintenance.

Healthcare Applications

In the healthcare-providing sectors, these sensors have revolutionized the way diagnosis and observation are being done. It can easily detect the activity and vitals of the person that will help in predicting the heart issues etc.

Telecommunication

These sensors have created a world where everyone is connected in some ways. The transferring of information is fast and quick and can go viral in a matter of hours. It has given power over data and information by enabling e-commerce transactions and supply chains.

Military

It is not unknown that the world military has become more advanced with hi-tech devices and gadgets. The advanced machinery has allowed the military to create real-time war zones for better training and simulation of personnel.

By using technologies like Radar and Supersonic speed, the military can detect. The presence of an enemy without physically being present.

Smart Cities

Smart cities are a new type of automated cities with automated street lights, road traffic being controlled through the edge-computing, smart, and automated waste management. Better safety and security of people at their homes also increased surveillance by law enforcement personnel.

Conclusion

In recent decades we have seen several technologies and among all IoT-based smart sensors. Are in the spotlight for providing a vast potential and huge range of applications and tasks. We can also call them the future of innovation and technology. That represents the new era of detection capacity and self-monitoring.

The future of smart sensing and detection can be more helpful in areas of food and biological threats, we already see their rampant use in environment tracking, healthcare sector, medicine manufacturing, food processing and packaging, home & building automation, and aerospace & military among many other applications.
