The electric motor gets all the power from a rechargeable battery. The EV batteries are large, and complex, and contain all the power required for the vehicle’s propelling power. 

The good condition of batteries makes them long-lasting and keeps the performance stable; however, some factors in batteries can hinder it, like high temperature.

Why EV Batteries Require Thermal Management?

The extreme temperature impacts the performance of EV batteries. If the temperature is too low, it will slow down the performance. The electrochemical reactions of the battery will not work properly below 00C. A decrease can be seen in the power and acceleration of the vehicle, and its driveability will also be reduced. 

High temperature also degrades the battery and performance. If the temperature exceeds 300C, the power density and performance will be reduced. The acceleration also gets affected due to high heat. The additional requirement of air conditioning adds to the heat generation.

Thermal runaway is also caused by high temperatures and leads to battery failure. EV batteries work in extreme temperatures and are exposed to high heat when undergoing fast charging. The batteries require additional support during ultra-fast charging, like a lightweight thermal pad for EV battery pack cooling. A thermal runaway is an event that starts when a chain reaction takes place. When the heat moves rapidly from cell to cell, this reaction damages the battery pack and individual cells of the whole vehicle. 

The battery of an EV is the main source of its power requirement for engine activation, lights, temperature monitoring, illuminating the head and back tail lights, etc. The batteries get heated due to the constant current flowing, charging, and discharging. 

The battery pack has several cells stacked together, and the space between each cell gets heated, damaging the cells and reducing their capacity to hold electric power and storage. A proper battery management system is the right solution for this. BMS includes several methods to keep the batteries in the right shape and state, and the thermal management solution is one of them. 

Excessive temperature affects Lithium-ion batteries and their capacity too. The heat generation is done from multiple sources, including internal components and electrode overpotential. This all gets mixed up with the workings of cell reaction, the heat of mixing, and side reaction which all contribute to the heat generation. 

High heat will impact the electrochemical system, fast charging, power output, safety, and the working life cycle of the battery. Degrading performance adds to the vehicle’s cost and reduces its driveability.

How does Thermal Management work in EV Batteries?

Lithium-ion batteries are used in EVs, and effective thermal management is essential for the vehicle’s and its battery’s adequate and consistent performance. Battery and EV manufacturers are always looking for new ways to keep the batteries good to enhance quality and safety. 

The ideal temperature of lithium-ion batteries ranges from 50C to 500C; outside this range, it is difficult to keep the vehicle’s performance. To maintain this temperature range, BMS is required for which several components are used that are thermally conductive and help keep the temperature under control. Thermally conductive tape and pads are the most common components that provide an additional thermal solution to the battery pack. How Are Lightweight Thermal Pads Used For Heat Resistance In EVs?

Apart from this, thermally conductive tapes are a secondary component used for the same purpose. Tapes are also used in cases where the manufacturer requires adhesives to bond the components together. It is wise and smart to use a thermally conductive adhesive like tape in this case as it will bond the items together while providing additional to the same components.

The accumulated heat creates hot spots, which quickly lead to and elevate the thermal decomposition of the individual cells, also known as thermal runaway.
