Power Electronics

A part of electrical engineering, power electronics is a contemporary subject area that has played a significant role in the enhancement of the living standards of the human civilization in recent years. You would be surprised to see the number of applications that you come across in your daily lives that include power electronics components.
Power electronics is an amalgamation of some of the important branches of engineering that includes semiconductors, power engineering, and electronics and control systems. The first remarkable component of power electronics was introduced in 1958 by General Electric Co. and was called the thyristors.
Ever since there have been plethora of innovations in this domain. One thing that has remained constant is that the power electronic device works as a switch with two defined states, ON and OFF.
Rectifiers, Choppers, Inverters, Voltage Regulators, and Cycloconverters are five different types of power electronics circuits.
Power electronics devices on their own do not have much utility. They are useful when they are part of a circuit and work effectively with supporting components around – the firing and the feedback circuits, for example, are two common applications of power electronics. It is also vital to remember here that in power electronics, leakage of current and switching losses need to be addressed productively.
